I live with my terrific husband of 19 years, Robin, in the rural splendour of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia. Both of us are animal lovers with Robin directing his attention to his lovely Razado (a Peruvian for those of you in the equine-world) and I spend my time feeding and cleaning , cleaning and feeding , and sitting back watching the little idiots (whoops; – Parrots!) go about their daily business. Always entertaining! But I won’t bore you with the “cutesy” stories (although there’s plenty), I’ll go bore my other breeder buddies with those.
I went into it simply because I just love to watch and partake of the entire cycle. I think I’m a farmer at heart and if you had ever seen some of my outfits for tramping around in the vegetable garden, you’d know it was true. .
I’m not satisfied with merely stuffing food down their gullets, pretty much anyone with extra time on their hands and a spoon can manage that part. The really interesting part lies in creating worlds for the chicks to simulate nature as closely as possible and to provide a nurturing world for them. By that I mean trying to understand their mindset so as to direct them into becoming curious and confident adults. Feeding is easy. The rest takes effort. I’ve seen babies left to grow in wide-open brightly lit aquariums, babies with no supplemental heat and only each other to keep warm, babies with no toys and only seed to wean onto. I’ve seen a lot of really sickening and completely negligent practices. I’ve also met a number of truly caring and professional breeders and I’d be happy to refer any of them to you if you catch me without any chicks ready for you.
My flock is small (5 pairs ) which means less work and more fun.
Fewer babies which means happier babies as I have the time and energy to not only feed them, but to play with them, show them new things, interact with them and create loving, trusting and happily curious companions.
That’s about it, unless you are really really interested in what time I have breakfast, what my favorite movies are and what type of shampoo I prefer………and if you are; all I can say is “Yikes!”
